...education as distinct from training, job training, development of social skills, citizenship, etc. In a former time, the roles of libraries and museums as essential extensions of the activities of a literate populace were widely accepted and understood. Today, the failure - in so many respects - of our public education system has raised the spectre of these insitutions facing a future with no audiences, and thus no advocates. Libraries and museums must take a greater role in educating their present and potential users, as well as providing learners with the resources to expand their activities and their thinking well beyond what formal education presently offers.
