Promote Adequate/Sustainable Bandwidth for Libraries

IMLS should study bandwidth needs, create standards, and develop a system for libraries to catch-up on bandwidth needs. With so many essential services delivered delivered digitally and accessible within libraries, we must have adequate bandwidth to meet local needs.

  1. In my State of Florida the stimulus bandwidth project has stagnated. State Libraries should be in charge of these funds and dissemination of same to the best benefit of the enduser not to create another layer of bureaucracy.

  2. IMLS should be in the lead in the effort to secure federal resources for Bandwidth enhancement. IMLS should also provide leadership in justification for enhanced bandwidth for libraries as community anchor institutions. Adequate Internet access and bandwidth is becoming as vital to the services of every public library as a forth pillar - added to staff, collections, and buildings. While the implementation of enhanced bandwidth should be left to the local and state to implement, IMLS can play a lead role in making sure that this message is heard on the national stage.
